Oz Goose Class

The Oz Goose Class is one of the most respected sailboat racing classes in the Philippines.  It is a “Home Built” class  best described as the original concept of the Optimist, built to “adult size”.  It is an easy to sail, inexpensive boat, with very strong community support.  The Oz Goose can be raced competitively by one person or two, and can be sailed with up to three small people (up to 400 lbs).

There are  around 100 Oz Geese in the Philippines, and around 30 are at Taal Lake Yacht Club, as of January 2023. The class is  growing in other clubs too and is now the biggest one-design class in the Philippines.

The Oz Goose is used both on the racing circuit as well as its being the mainstay of the TLYC’s sail training program.

RENTING AND RACING
The regular Oz Goose rental rate per day is ₱1600. There are discounts on race days. Every second Sunday of the month, or as otherwise scheduled, Oz Goose regattas are held, which are open to all. The boats are available for rent for about ₱800/day + the race fee. Sometimes there are more sailors than there are boats, so reserve early.

SAIL TRAINING
PHBYC uses Oz Geese as the mainstay of its sail training program.  The Oz Goose dinghies are ideal because they are small enough to be used by small kids,  yet they can be used to teach adult sailors.  The boats are good for families, corporate team building, and for schools.

BUYING AND KEEPING A GOOSE
Individuals can buy a goose for around P60,000 and keep it at TLYC at regular rates, which are currently (2023) at P800/month.  You can build one yourself, for about P50,000.  Alternatively you can join the Sponsorship Program, and pay even less.  PHBYC sometimes has Family Boatbuilding Weekends, where you can build your own goose, under supervision, with many parts already pre cut and pre-built, for less than the cost of building the whole thing by yourself.

SPONSORSHIP PROGRAM
Under the PHBYC /TLYC  sponsorship program, you can enter your Goose into a special program where you can cut your storage fee in half,  make money by renting your boat to others, reduce your club membership costs, help promote sailing, and fund disabled sailing as well as our local community sailing program.
