The Philippine Hobie Fleet has gotten some welcome new blood in the last few months, with several new teams that have joined up. Immediately making themselves felt at the top tier of competition, were Raphael De Colnet and Pierre Henri Berard fondly called “The French Fryes”. With new sponsorship by AGS Four Winds, their competitiveness definitely increased with the new sails from AGS Four winds. Often at the front of the fleet, or hot on the leaders heels, they showed their skills at the Brillo Regatta, but they were sliced by the new potato in the fleet.
Potato Corner’s “Spudster”, sailed by Peter Capotosto and Carla Kramer dominated the regatta, particularly on the upwind legs.
Taal Lake Yacht Club’s best woman sailor and consistent podium placer Maria Vidoeira and her crew Joe Hagedorn, were always in the top 3, and in fact, came second in this Brillo Regatta on December’s second Sunday, December 8. Alex Chen sailed with Jose Sehwani Gonzales, a young new aggressive sailor who is showing a lot of potential.
Preparing for PHINSAF’s Philippine Hobie Challenge Paolo Viloria seems to be upping Dr. Dennis Cruz’s game.
Not new to sailing or racing, Albert Altura and Geoff Morgan De Revery have been racing keelboats mostly. Now they are moving to Hobie 16s. Getting used to these boats that are so light, but very difficult to turn, are a necessity. Both teams however, are showing clearly that they are learning quickly, and they are sailing their boats better and better every time they go out.
The club and the sailors appreciated the efforts of another new sailor, Rico Severino who organized the Sponsorship for the Sunday racing. A big thanks to Brillo, a company whose products, the Premium Italian Arabica coffee, and Premium corned beef are going to be used in the club’s menu.
Karlo Panahon was out cruising around in Reg Beltran’s Hobie Bravo, a class that we hope gel’s into a solid racing fleet.
Have a Hobie day!
